How Biomimetic Science is Helping Skin Defy Gravity

Gravityl™: The Science Behind the Zero-G Facial Lifting

We often marvel at the natural forces that shape our world—like gravity, which is as constant as it is unyielding. But what if, for a moment, we could resist the gravitational tug on our own skin? Discover Gravityl™ from Givaudan Active Beauty. Derived from macrolagae, this active ingredient uses nature’s resilience to counteract the relentless effects of gravity on our skin. It’s a story where science and nature converge, offering us an unprecedented take on facial reshaping.

From Ocean Depths to Zero-G Skin Benefits

Gravityl™ has a fascinating origin: a redmacrolagae, Gigartina stellata, a kind of seaweed that thrives in the unique challenges of underwater environments. Just as it grows by adapting to the strong currents and changing depths of the ocean, Gravityl™ helps our skin adapt to the challenges of aging. The active’s properties are developed to help lift and reshape facial contours—essentially working against gravity to deliver a lifted, more defined appearance.

Biomimicry: Borrowing the Ocean’s Adaptability

Gravityl™ isn’t just about lifting; it’s about borrowing the ocean’s adaptive mechanisms. Biomimicry is a powerful concept—taking the solutions nature has designed over millennia and applying them to human challenges. Gravityl™ replicates how macrolagae remain buoyant and resilient under pressure, allowing it to help our skin maintain its lift and firmness in the face of gravitational forces. Gravityl™ allows our skin to benefit from the adaptive properties of seaweed, all from the comfort of home.

Why Zero-G? The Skin’s Perspective

Gravity, while fundamental for our planet, is a daily burden for our skin. The cumulative effect over decades results in sagging, deepening folds, and less distinct facial features. The Zero-G concept refers to the ability of Gravityl™ to lift the skin as though it’s suddenly free from the downward pull. Gravityl™ creates that same sense of lift, without any extreme measures required.

Biological and Clinical Evaluation

Gravityl™ has undergone rigorous biological and clinical evaluations to substantiate its efficacy in improving skin structure and elasticity:

Collagen Synthesis Under Oxidative Stress (In Vitro)

Type I collagen synthesis was evaluated on fibroblasts treated or not with 0.5% of Gravityl™ (48 hours of incubation) and under oxidative stress (H2O2 for 2 hours) in order to mimic premature aging, before a new 48 hours incubation after rinsing. Type I collagen was then quantified by ELISA method.

Results showed that Gravityl™ significantly upregulates collagen I production even under stress, highlighting its ability to counteract aging effects.

Transcriptomic Study on Skin Elasticity (In Vitro)

A transcriptomic analysis using RT-qPCR demonstrated that Gravityl™ influences the expression of genes involved in dermal structure, elastic fiber organization, and protection against fiber degradation.

Proteome Analysis (Ex Vivo)

Proteome analysis on skin explants from young and mature donors treated with Gravityl™ indicated significant restoration of key proteins involved in skin elasticity and dermal structure, including MFAP4, Fibulin-5, and collagen types I and II.

Reorganization of Dermis Scaffold (Ex Vivo)

Using bi-photonic microscopy, it was shown that Gravityl™ significantly reorients collagen fibers to a more multi-directional organization, improving the dermal scaffold structure similar to that of younger skin.

Improvement of Skin Suppleness (Ex Vivo)

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) measurements revealed that Gravityl™ restores skin suppleness to levels comparable to skin 30 years younger, indicating a dramatic improvement in skin hydration and elasticity.

Clinical Efficacy on Collagen Density and Skin Lifting (Study #1)

A double-blind clinical study on 40 women aged 55-75 demonstrated that Gravityl™ significantly increases collagen density by up to 4.2%, providing a noticeable reshaping and lifting effect on facial skin.

Reduction of Double Chin Volume (Study #2)

Another clinical study on 44 women aged 35-57 showed that Gravityl™ significantly reduces double chin volume by -27.4 mm³ on average, along with improvements in skin firmness and elasticity by up to 8%.

Putting It All Together: A Lift for the Modern Age

In our quest to resist aging, Gravityl™ offers a solution inspired by Earth’s oceans and rooted in biomimetic science. It’s not about a miracle cure; it’s about understanding how natural resilience can be harnessed to provide practical benefits. Gravityl™ is a reminder that while we may not control gravity, we can use science to adapt to its challenges, keeping our skin lifted, firm, and ready to face whatever comes our way.
